Long-term performance of MgO–SiO2 binder

Abstract Magnesium silicate hydrate (M–S–H) formed on reaction of MgO and reactive SiO 2 imparts binding characteristics similar to Portland cement (PC). Limited knowledge is available the long-term mechanical durability performance M–S–H binder systems. In this study, MgO–SiO was assessed up 365 days. addition silica fume (SF), most widely used source with MgO, calcined clay (CC) kaolinite content ~ 40–50% industrial grade metakaolin (MK) were also investigated. Mortar specimens prepared all three sources at different proportion levels source. Thermodynamic modelling carried out further understand changes occurring in phase assemblage during hydration for adopted proportions. Concrete mixes comprising MK or SF a ratio 1:1 PC as control mix cast water 0.4.
